To mark the start of National Vegetarian Week and the Cambridge CAMRA
beer festival, Jilly Goolden talks about vegetarian drinks and what
actually goes into wine and beer. Many of them contain animal products
or have been refined using them - a fact that does not have to be
mentioned on the bottle.
Co-op labels all its alcoholic drinks with ingredients and nutrition information, although this is not "legal" according to the EU. Tesco, Waitrose and Marks and Spencer all use the vegetarian logo on their wines (where appropriate) and Vintage Roots, the wine merchant, claim that 95% of the wines they list are vegetarian.
Jilly's recommended vegetarian wines are a juicy, fruity red which can be chilled, 2005 Saumur Rouge Les Nivieres £4.99 from Waitrose and a peachy and lissom white, Oxford Landing Viognier 2006 £5.99 from Co-op.
She also recommends a wholly natural, vegan lager made simply from water, hops, malted barley and yeast, Samuel Smiths Organic Lager which is widely available at independent off licenses (further details at www.tadcaster.uk.com)
