Those made in a thoroughly modern, light fruity way (usually employing the carbonic maceration technique, by which the whole berries are fermented, the fermentation itself striking up within the skin of the grape, therefore avoiding the tougher tannic elements introduced by exposing the juice to the outside skin of the grape for a long period).
Cuvee des Vignerons Beaujolais ’06, £4.99, Waitrose
Scents of hot rubber and cherries, light and prettily fruity and gentle.
Cotes du Rhone Cellier des Dauphins ’05, £5.99, Morrisons
Made from Grenache and Syrah grapes, this red is thoroughly light on its toes; juicy, fruity stuff
Brown Brothers Tarrango ’05 Sainsburys
With associations with blackcurrant juice plus a note of liquorice on the finish. Lovely succulent, easy-drinking red with a bit of sweetness to it. Good for ‘white wine only’ types.
